Summary: HEInnovate Workshop with European Universities alliances

On 21 May 2025, HEInnovate hosted a workshop with 50 participants from 23 European Universities alliances to explore how the HEInnovate self-assessment tool can support strategic development, innovation, and entrepreneurship at the alliance level.

The session was facilitated by members of the HEInnovate Expert Group, Mona Roman (Metropolia UAS / U!REKA) and Marina Ranga (University of Seville / Ulysseus), alongside the HEInnovate support team. It featured an introduction to the HEInnovate tool, a practical user story from the U!REKA alliance, and breakout group discussions on adapting the tool for multi-institutional use. You can find more details about U!REKA's experience with HEInnovate here.

Participants reflected on the challenges and opportunities of applying HEInnovate at the alliance level—from aligning governance structures to coordinating joint initiatives and measuring collective impact. Key needs identified included adapting action cards and planning tools for alliances, and accounting for differences in maturity and institutional structures.

In response to requests raised after the workshop, the HEInnovate team has now added all 65 European Universities alliances to the list of higher education institutions available on the HEInnovate website. This means that alliances can now conduct a self-assessment on behalf of the entire alliance, beyond being able to do so separately for each partner.

Alliances that wish to implement HEInnovate are encouraged to contact the team at info@heinnovate.eu for support or to request a dedicated workshop.
